Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in the countries where the Group operates, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s primary focus has been to protect the health and safety of its employees, tenants, and visitors. We are carefully monitoring the latest health guidelines issued by the World Health Organization, national, regional, and local governments and adapt our operations accordingly.
In response to this crisis, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has engaged throughout the Group in a number of solidarity initiatives to support the communities in which it operates. A selection of our assets welcome initiatives to support the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak and we have decided to partner with local NGOs to serve the local communities. Our company purpose is « Reinvent Being Together »: in a time when being together has become difficult if not impossible, we are finding new ways to support our communities.

A "Safeguard" Excellence label for our US Shopping Centres

The Group has worked with Bureau Veritas – one of the world’s most distinguished leaders in testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) services – since 2012 to attest to the implementation of very strict standards regarding health and safety within our shopping centres. Following the certification of our Westfield European centres as “Safe & Healthy Places”, Bureau Veritas conducted a review and audit of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s world-class COVID-related health and safety practices, policies, and procedures in the United States. We are proud to announce that 28 of our US shopping centres are now certified with the industry-leading hygiene and safety excellence label, SafeGuardTM.

Welcome Back !

As of June 2nd, 65 of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s 90 shopping centres have re-opened after the easing of restrictions imposed because of the COVID-19 crisis. This follows announcements by authorities in Los Angeles and France on May 26 and 29, respectively. With the remainder of the Group’s centres currently planning to open by June 8 in Spain and June 15 in London, we expect to have at least 87% of our shopping centres (approximately 80% by book value) open by June 15. This number is likely to increase as further US states and counties confirm the end of their restrictions.

Viparis and Bureau Veritas jointly prepare health safety guidelines for event venues

Viparis - the European leader in hosting large-scale events, is helping France get back to business.
As part of this effort, Viparis is drawing up health safety guidelines for event venues. This is a top priority for employees, event organisers, exhibitors, service providers and visitors alike. Every point of contact between Viparis and its stakeholders has been identified to define a fully comprehensive safety protocol.
As a trusted third party, Bureau Veritas will help validate these guidelines, based on the latest recommendations of health authorities. Audits of venues will be conducted, which may lead to certification recognised by Bureau Veritas.

In the United States, our support of nearly 100 NGOs, non-profits, and community organisations in markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco / San Jose, Washington DC, San Diego, and Seattle is providing immediate assistance to some of the individuals and families most impacted by the crisis. In each of these regions, and everywhere we have centres, our teams are urgently focused on supporting the economically disadvantaged, children, seniors, the unsheltered, and other communities in need of a rapid response.

Connected retail: A strategic partnership with Zalando in Germany

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Germany enters into strategic cooperation with Zalando – and offers stationary retailers the chance to connect to the omnichannel platform with immediate effect in order to cope with the COVID-19 crisis.
Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Germany is now working together with Zalando within the framework of the Connected Retail programme. This partnership enables us to connect to Europe's largest online fashion platform, reach new customers through Zalando and improve inventory turnover among participating brands. The cooperation has been launched early in order to cope with the considerable challenges faced by the retail sector due to the COVID-19 crisis. As a result, stationary retailers in the shopping centres operated by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield in Germany are now provided with an additional sales channel for their products.

All involved against domestic violence

The French Government, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and a number of women’s rights organisations open “safe spaces” in eight of the Group’s shopping centres in France, in the context of the fight against COVID-19.
In close cooperation with Marlène Schiappa, Minister of State for Gender Equality and the Fight against Discrimination, attached to the Prime Minister, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has committed to support abused women and address domestic violence amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, by offering empty retail spaces in its shopping centres that remain accessible.

A COVID-19 screening centre at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles

On 17 March, following the French government's ban on gatherings of more than 100 people (Decree of 13 March 2020), Viparis, together with other players in the events management industry, have made its venues available to the health authorities, specifically Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, Paris Le Bourget and Paris Nord Villepinte.
